facilities support a multidisciplinary focus in the areas of electro-optics and fiber optics, electronics, mechanical
design, synthetic organic chemistry, bio-chemistry, fluid dynamics, and micromachining/vacuum technology.
Support tools include a full wet lab and ancillary photolithographic equipment for micromachining; a Hitachi® S-415A SEM; Dektak® III surface profiler; Airco Temescal® e-beam evaporator; and a CVC 601 RF magnetron sputtering system. Optics hardware includes Kodak® Megaplus CCD camera system; Synrad® CO2 laser; precision surface grinder; MicroAutomation® 1006A programmable dicing saw; Buehler® fiber polisher; ultrasonic fiber cleaver, and custom computer-controlled spectrometers. Software for optical design includes OPTICADT, Xemax-XE, and BeamPropT. Electronics capabilities include Tango circuit board design; Micro-Cap V simulation; Forth, Basic and C software packages, and miscellaneous tools and equipment (surface mount and though-hole board designs are supported) including an NCI® PA600 logic analyzer; Tektronix® 7603,7633, and 1720A oscilloscopes. The manufacturing facility of 1,500 sq ft includes assembly areas, with an Asymtek© model 403 robot, a 6-station controlled humidity glove box with vacuum interchange, and testing areas with environmental and sterilization chambers.
An on-site chemistry lab is equipped for standard organic and biochemical laboratory techniques, including air and
moisture-sensitive compounds, bioassay development, and functionalized surface development. Hardware includes capillary
and standard column gas chromatographs; HPLC and gel electrophoresis equipment; UV-Vis® diode array spectrophotometer,
spectrofluorometer, and a Perkin-Elmer® Series 1600 FTIR.
